Ireland's Diarmuid Early has claimed victory in the first-ever Microsoft Excel World Championship (MEWC) Landmark Battle, held on the weekend of July 11th, 2026. Early, who also won the Excel World Championship in December 2025, triumphed over three other elite competitors in this innovative event.
The Landmark Battle pushed participants to their limits, with challenges taking place at four distinct global landmarks: the Statue of Liberty in New York, Big Ben in London, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and Sydney Harbour in Australia. Competitors utilized ASUS ExpertBook Ultras and portable external displays, typing and calculating furiously against these iconic backdrops.
The MEWC, founded by Andrew Grigolyunovich, has been showcasing Excel expertise since 2021, with past broadcasts even appearing on ESPN. This year's Landmark Battle, inspired by 'Around The World in 80 Days,' aimed to reflect the dynamic environments of remote workers, featuring challenges conceived by other Excel experts.
This unique event highlights the expanding reach of Excel Esports. While typically associated with video games, Excel competitions demonstrate that proficiency in spreadsheets can also be a spectator sport. Qualifiers for the 2026 MEWC are already underway, with the main event scheduled to take place in Las Vegas.
