The co-founders, including CEO Dan Summers, bring expertise from SpaceX, particularly in fabricating complex components like the Raptor engines. They leverage intelligent software systems that enabled rapid iteration and precise manufacturing, a methodology now applied to steel fabrication.
The startup partners with companies like Path Robotics to integrate advanced technologies, including robotic arms for automated welding. This approach offers substantial advantages over traditional methods, with robotic welding being significantly cheaper and more efficient than manual labor.
1872 utilizes an AI-driven software system, "Architect," to create and schedule manufacturing plans, which then directs robotic operations through a system called "Conductor." This integrated approach aims to streamline production, reduce costs, and improve efficiency in steel manufacturing. The company has secured $15 million in seed funding to establish its operations and develop its technology.
