EVs Face Repair Crisis: Future Uncertain
15 May
Summary
- Manufacturers focus on recyclability over repairability for EV batteries.
- Replacing batteries is costlier than repairing them for used EVs.
- Lack of repair incentive threatens EV residual values and longevity.

The long-term viability of electric vehicles (EVs) is under threat as a 'replace rather than repair' mentality takes hold, according to Cox Automotive.
Experts at the FT Future of the Car Summit highlighted that manufacturers are designing EV batteries with recyclability in mind, not repairability. This focus, coupled with legislation centered on recycling, discourages making battery packs easy to fix.
This approach poses a significant risk to the residual values of used EVs. When a battery pack fails outside of warranty, replacement is often more expensive than the vehicle's value, making them less cost-effective than anticipated.
This lack of repairability mirrors issues seen in the consumer tech industry, potentially creating consumer confidence problems for EVs. The inability to easily repair or replace individual battery cells, unlike in combustion engine vehicles, deters potential buyers.
