Offline Voice Commands Debut on Smart Plug
17 Feb
Summary
- New smart plug offers voice control without apps or cloud.
- It features two outlets, a USB-A, and a USB-C port.
- Voice commands only work on one of the outlets.

Emerson introduced a privacy-focused smart device option at CES 2026, featuring voice assistant technology built directly into the hardware. This innovation eliminates the need for Wi-Fi, apps, or cloud data collection.
The Emerson SmartVoice smart plug, priced at $35, serves as a versatile 4-in-one outlet expander. It offers two 15-amp outlets, a USB-A port, and a USB-C port, allowing multiple devices to be connected simultaneously. Setup is straightforward: simply plug it in and press a button to activate, bypassing the typical app-based installation.
While functional, the voice command feature has limitations. The wake word is "Hey Emerson," customizable to "Hey plug one" through "Hey plug five." However, only the right-hand outlet supports voice commands, with the other outlets and USB ports lacking this capability. The plug is most effective with simple on/off functions, excelling with devices like lamps but struggling with those having their own controls, such as a candle warmer.
Despite its size, which requires significant space around the outlet, the plug's offline voice commands proved accurate and effective for basic tasks. Users can set wake/sleep timers for connected devices like heaters or humidifiers. This offers a practical solution for managing devices remotely or for individuals needing assistance, such as aging-in-place elders, while maintaining data privacy.
