ElevenLabs, a company specializing in AI voice technology that converts text into human-sounding speech, has reportedly secured a valuation of $22 billion. This burgeoning unicorn is pacing $600 million in annual recurring revenue just four years after its inception.
The company's technology is integral to customer service operations for major entities, including Klarna, which utilizes it for its 35 million U.S. customers, as well as Deutsche Telekom, Cisco, and Adobe. It also caters to creators for audiobooks and dubbing.
In a recent interview, CEO Mati Staniszewski discussed the company's future, predicting that AI audio models will become commoditized within a few years. He stated ElevenLabs' ambition to be the first to pass the Turing test for conversational AI, requiring a blend of intelligence and emotional understanding.
Regarding its business model, over fifty-five percent of ElevenLabs' revenue comes from enterprise clients, with a significant portion of the remainder from small to medium businesses, developers, and creators. The company acknowledges increasing competition, even from clients who have trained their own voice products on ElevenLabs' technology.
Staniszewski also addressed the use of different AI models, noting that while open-weight models suffice for informational customer service, frontier models are preferred for sensitive applications like financial services where accuracy is paramount.
He believes businesses should disclose AI interactions to customers, anticipating a societal shift where AI agents become commonplace. The company's rapid growth is attributed to its ability to annotate data meticulously with thousands of contractors, including voice coaches, to ensure accuracy in accents and emotions.
While preparing for a potential IPO in the coming years, ElevenLabs is focused on building a lasting company and ensuring the responsible deployment of AI technology. They implement robust security measures, including KYC for all customers, to mitigate cybersecurity risks.
