Summary
- Kaleido 4 offers improved color reproduction and contrast.
- New technology boasts faster refresh rates, enabling video playback.
- Hanvon Technology will be first to feature Kaleido 4 in a China-only tablet.

E Ink has announced its latest advancement in color e-paper technology with the introduction of Kaleido 4. This new screen aims to overcome limitations of previous versions, such as Kaleido 3, by offering notably improved color reproduction and enhanced contrast ratios. The technology also achieves faster screen refresh rates, reaching up to 18 frames per second, which makes it capable of displaying video content.
While previous color e-paper screens used a color filter over black-and-white pigments, affecting resolution and saturation, Kaleido 4 aims for richer visuals. E Ink claims a doubled 'color gamut volume' for Kaleido 4, though it remains limited to 4,096 colors. Importantly, it increases white reflectance by 15 percent and boosts contrast by 50 percent, potentially making text appear clearer.
Hanvon Technology is set to be the first manufacturer to integrate Kaleido 4 into its upcoming M10C II tablet. This device will feature a glare-reducing, paper-like surface and is slated for an exclusive release in China. Other major manufacturers have not yet announced devices utilizing the new Kaleido 4 technology.
