MAI Unveils Drone Tech for Extended Flight Times

Engineers at the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) have successfully developed an advanced electric motor control system for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This innovative technology is designed to significantly reduce energy consumption, thereby extending the operational life of drones on a single battery charge.

The new system precisely manages the phase relationship between motor winding current and voltage, which minimizes energy loss and heat generation. It also creates a smoother magnetic field for more efficient motor rotation, avoiding energy-wasting vibrations. This approach is particularly beneficial for drones engaged in cargo delivery and continuous monitoring operations where flight duration is a critical factor.

Furthermore, the MAI-developed system eliminates the necessity for additional sensors to measure rotor angle and speed. This reduction in components not only lowers the overall cost and weight of the drone but also simplifies its electrical drive layout and enhances operational reliability. Researchers are currently in the prototype testing and debugging phase, with further evaluations planned to assess the system's energy and operational characteristics.
