Uber and Chinese autonomous vehicle operator WeRide have commenced deploying fully driverless vehicles for their robotaxi service in Abu Dhabi. Customers in the UAE capital can now hail an UberX or Uber Comfort and potentially be matched with an autonomous WeRide vehicle.
The fully autonomous service is initially limited to select areas within the 12-square-mile Yas Island. WeRide's GXR vehicles, equipped with advanced sensors, can accommodate up to five passengers. This marks a significant step towards widespread adoption of autonomous transportation in the region.
