Discord Ditches Electron for Speed!
5 Nov
Summary
- Discord is migrating its desktop apps entirely to Rust.
- The move aims to significantly reduce RAM usage.
- The company plans to start user testing soon.

Discord is making a substantial technological pivot, moving its desktop applications entirely over to the Rust programming language. This strategic decision marks the end of its reliance on Electron, a framework known for consuming significant system resources. By adopting Rust, a language prized for its speed and memory safety, Discord aims to deliver a more efficient user experience.
Chief technology officer Stanislav Vishnevskiy confirmed the move, stating that much of Discord's infrastructure and voice technology already utilizes Rust. The goal is to bring the entire client experience to this modern language. This transition is expected to drastically reduce the application's memory footprint, a notable improvement from current versions that can consume over 1GB of RAM.
While a specific timeline for the full migration remains undisclosed, Discord intends to initiate user testing for the Rust-based client soon. This development promises a lighter and potentially faster Discord experience for its users across platforms, with mobile versions also benefiting from shared app code via Rust.
