Discord's Memory Glitch: App to Restart Itself
9 Dec, 2025
Summary
- Discord app tests automatic restarts for high memory usage.
- Restarts occur after one hour of inactivity and no calls.
- Electron framework contributes to Discord's memory bloat.

The popular communication platform Discord is currently implementing a novel solution to combat its excessive memory usage on Windows 11. The application will now undergo testing for a feature that automatically restarts itself if its RAM consumption surpasses 4GB. This addresses reports that the app consumes unnecessary amounts of memory, a persistent issue for many users.
The implemented safety measures ensure that these restarts will not interrupt active user sessions. The automatic restart will only initiate if the Discord app has been running for at least an hour, the user has been inactive for a minimum of 30 minutes, and no voice or video calls are in progress. This feature is also limited to a single occurrence per day to minimize user disruption.
This memory issue is primarily linked to the underlying Electron app framework. While Discord's memory usage is typically around 1GB, it can rapidly increase as users load more servers and features, leading to performance degradation. The new self-restarting mechanism is a direct response to this challenge.
