Discord Rolls Out Age Checks: What You Need to Know
25 Sep
Summary
- Discord's age verification system estimates user ages using account activity.
- Privacy concerns led to alternative age verification methods.
- Age-restricted content will be blocked for teen users on Discord.

Discord has resumed rolling out its age verification system, designed to enhance safety for its younger users. The platform now estimates user ages by analyzing factors like server memberships and account age, ensuring no message content is reviewed. This approach aims to minimize disruption, with 90 percent of users expected to see no changes.
Following initial user backlash over privacy concerns related to facial scanning and ID uploads, Discord has introduced alternative verification methods. These include credit card authorization, age range sharing from app stores like Apple and Google, Google Wallet confirmation, or an AgeKey credential.
Adult users will experience no change in platform functionality. Teenage users will retain access to messaging, voice calls, and general servers but will be blocked from age-restricted content. New safety features are also in place for direct messages from unknown users. Discord is proactively implementing these measures, starting in places like Texas, to align with expanding global age verification laws.
