Discord has issued a clarification regarding its forthcoming age verification measures, emphasizing that most users will not be required to undergo face scans or provide identification. The platform stated that its "age prediction" models, utilizing existing account information, device data, and community activity patterns, will likely suffice for many. This update aims to address community concerns following the initial announcement.

For users whose age cannot be concretely estimated by Discord's models, alternative verification methods like a video selfie or ID upload will be necessary. Individuals not verified as adults, or those determined to be under 18, will encounter a "teen-appropriate" experience. This will include limitations such as restricted access to age-restricted servers and channels.

This approach mirrors practices on other platforms like Instagram and YouTube, which also employ AI for age estimation. Discord's clarification comes after user frustration and privacy concerns were raised, particularly in light of a past data breach involving a third-party vendor used for age verification. The company has since discontinued services with that vendor.
