Govt. Redactions Get an AI Upgrade
28 Sep
Summary
- DHS will employ AI to accelerate document redaction for FOIA requests.
- AI tools will suggest redactions for human officers to review.
- Up to 140,000 DHS FOIA submissions will use AI redaction.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is implementing artificial intelligence tools to enhance the process of redacting sensitive information within government documents. This move, detailed in the federal AI Use Case Inventory, aims to expedite responses to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, which saw nearly 1.7 million submissions last year.
AI will serve as an assistant, suggesting redactions for human officers to review and approve, thereby ensuring accuracy and completeness of information provided to requesters. By the end of September 2026, DHS plans to utilize these AI tools for over 10% of its received FOIA submissions, potentially processing up to 140,000 documents.
Other federal departments are also exploring AI for document handling. U.S. Customs and Border Protection, under DHS, will use Google's AI. The Interior Department is considering a Microsoft tool, while the Justice Department has identified an AI video-redaction tool named aiWARE.
