DeepMind CEO: China AI Lags Western Labs
21 Jan
Summary
- China's AI innovation trails Western labs by six months.
- US chip export ban on advanced AI is easing for China.
- DeepMind focuses on robotics and Gemini AI assistant.

Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, has indicated that Chinese artificial intelligence companies are currently about six months behind the innovation curve of leading Western laboratories. He observed that while these firms are adept at matching existing technological frontiers, they have yet to demonstrate significant breakthroughs beyond them.
This assessment comes as the United States reportedly eases restrictions on advanced AI chip exports to China. Previously, such bans, aimed at limiting Beijing's access to critical semiconductor technology, compelled Chinese researchers to explore alternative development paths.
Despite these challenges, Chinese AI startups are gaining traction, with some launching on stock exchanges. DeepMind itself is actively engaged in advancing Google's Gemini AI assistant and is making significant strides in robotics, a field Hassabis anticipates will soon see a major breakthrough in physical intelligence.
