Data Center Jobs Boom Amidst Tech Layoffs
24 Oct
Summary
- Data center job postings on Indeed more than doubled in two years.
- Construction spending on data centers increased by 23% last year.
- Tech layoffs continue while data center jobs show strong growth.
Job listings for data centers in the U.S. have seen a significant increase, more than doubling over the past two years on the Indeed platform. This growth occurred even as overall U.S. job postings declined by approximately 12% and tech-related postings, excluding data centers, fell by 6%.
This expansion is underpinned by a substantial rise in private spending on data center construction, which grew by 23% in the past year, reaching nearly $60 billion as of May 2026. The demand for computing capacity driven by artificial intelligence serves as a backdrop for this build-out.
While data center roles typically fall on the lower end of tech salaries, installation and maintenance positions specifically advertise higher pay rates than comparable jobs outside the sector. Hourly positions show a median wage 42% higher, and salaried roles offer 12% more annually.
Currently, the 10 largest tech companies by market capitalization account for 71% of all data center job postings. A significant hub for this growth is identified in Hermiston, Oregon, linked to AWS data center operations.
However, an open question remains about the long-term stability of these jobs once the current construction phase concludes, especially amidst widespread tech industry layoffs.
