China's CXMT Ventures into Flash Memory Market
18 Sep
Summary
- CXMT plans to enter the NAND flash memory market, previously dominated by foreign firms.
- The move pits CXMT against domestic rival YMTC in a rapidly growing semiconductor segment.
- Strong demand from AI servers is creating a global memory shortage projected to persist.

Chinese chipmaker CXMT is set to enter the competitive flash memory chip market, a significant expansion for the DRAM specialist. This move challenges established global players like Samsung Electronics, which currently leads the NAND market. CXMT's entry into this booming segment is fueled by a global memory shortage, exacerbated by strong demand from AI servers, a situation industry executives predict will continue at least through 2027.
CXMT, also known as ChangXin Memory Technologies, intends to establish a dedicated research-and-development production line for NAND flash memory at its new plant in Beijing. This initiative signals a strategic diversification, potentially pitting it against domestic rival YMTC, China's current leading NAND manufacturer. The company has reportedly discussed its NAND plans with potential customers, including a startup focused on AI systems and supercomputers.
Both CXMT and YMTC are considered key pillars in China's ambition for a self-sufficient chip industry, supported by national and local government backing. This development occurs amidst Washington's export restrictions, which have intensified China's drive to develop domestic semiconductor suppliers. CXMT recently raised approximately $8.6 billion in Asia's largest IPO this year.
