Summary
- New standard enables video calls within messaging apps.
- Interoperable video calls could connect iPhone and Android users.
- Feature is finalized but device support is unconfirmed.

A new standard for richer messaging experiences has been finalized, potentially enabling video calls between iPhone and Android users. The GSMA announced that the RCS Universal Profile 4.0 now supports Messaging-Initiated Video Calls (MIVC).
This feature aims to allow users to initiate video calls directly from 1-to-1 or group RCS chats. The GSMA stated that MIVC will ensure conversation continuity, enabling group members to join ongoing video calls and synchronizing logs within the chat timeline. This development could lead to the first natively supported, interoperable video call experience across various devices and networks.
Despite the finalization of the standard, there is no official word from Apple or Google regarding their support for MIVC. Consequently, it remains unclear if or when users might be able to leverage this cross-platform video calling capability from their messaging applications. Both companies have not yet responded to requests for comment on their plans.
RCS Universal Profile 4.0 also introduces other enhancements, such as text formatting options like bold and italics, and improved sharing of audio, video, and images.
