The compact camera market is experiencing an unexpected resurgence, with industry data revealing a 29.6% year-on-year increase in shipments for 2025. This growth is accompanied by a disproportionate 49.8% rise in value, highlighting a trend towards more premium, higher-priced models. This revival is attributed to factors like viral social media trends and a renewed interest in retro technology.
In contrast, the market for interchangeable lens cameras shows mixed results. Mirrorless camera shipments have seen a steady increase of 12.5% year-on-year, reaching 6.31 million units. However, DSLR shipments have plummeted to an all-time low of 691,000 units, marking a 30.8% decrease and suggesting a decline in this segment.
Overall, the camera industry, as reported by CIPA, saw an 11% increase in shipments across compact, DSLR, and mirrorless categories. This positive trend offers encouragement for camera enthusiasts and suggests a potential reinvestment in new compact camera development by major manufacturers.
