Cisco Unveils Quantum Computer Connector

Cisco is developing technology to connect quantum computers, aiming to create a future 'internet of quantum machines.' Their new switching chip is designed to bridge the gap between different quantum computing approaches, such as those using lasers on suspended atoms or superconductors. This device operates at room temperature and uses standard fiber-optic cables, translating between various quantum technologies.

While widespread quantum networks are projected for the 2030s, Cisco's switch offers more immediate benefits, particularly in cybersecurity. The technology can network multiple quantum sensors, which are currently available, creating an entangled state. Any attempt to eavesdrop on this network would disrupt the entanglement, alerting users to the intrusion. This capability could fundamentally change network defense strategies.
