Miami-based Chip Motors has unveiled Chip, a unique open-air electric vehicle designed as a "life utility vehicle" (LUV). This low-speed vehicle, with a top speed of 25 mph, is intended for short errands and local travel. Chip features a distinctive LED screen on its bumper that acts as a digital face and responds to commands. The vehicle also boasts a self-parking function, with ambitions for Level 4 autonomous driving in the future.
The Chip EV is equipped with in-wheel motors and a 15 kWh LFP battery, offering an estimated 100-mile range. It can be charged overnight on a standard household outlet. Available in four- and six-seat configurations, pricing starts at $15,000, with reservations open for a $250 deposit. Chip Motors aims to begin deliveries in 2027.
CEO Jameson Detweiler envisions Chip capturing the freedom of scooters while eliminating the complexities of traditional car ownership. He believes large, heavy vehicles are inefficient for short trips. The company is also developing a "Chip Go!" feature, allowing remote summoning and operation via an app or voice command, with Chip Motors taking legal responsibility for remotely operated vehicles.
