China Unveils Mobile Catapult for Drones
12 Jul
Summary
- China demonstrated a road-mobile electromagnetic catapult for drone launches.
- The technology miniaturizes existing aircraft carrier EMALS for portable use.
- This innovation enables drone deployment without traditional runways.

China has revealed a significant advancement in drone deployment technology with a road-mobile electromagnetic catapult. This innovative system, showcased in a video from the Beijing Institute of Technology's School of Mechanical Engineering, utilizes a compact version of the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) found on its aircraft carriers.
The demonstration featured three linked eight-wheeled trucks forming a portable launch platform. This configuration allows propeller-driven drones to achieve flight without the need for a traditional runway. The system's all-wheel steering capability suggests it could launch aircraft in any direction, provided sufficient space.
This development positions China as the first country to demonstrate a land-based, portable EMALS. While the United States pioneered carrier-based EMALS in 2017, China's innovation offers a unique battlefield advantage. France and India are also committed to EMALS technology for future aircraft carriers.
Although the original social media post was removed, the footage has sparked discussions among defense analysts, highlighting its potential impact on next-generation drone combat capabilities.
