China's Hurricane 3000: New Drone Swarm Killer
17 Jan
Summary
- China's Hurricane 3000 weapon targets drone swarms with microwaves.
- The system has an effective range exceeding 3km against small drones.
- It integrates with other defenses for a comprehensive anti-drone strategy.

China has revealed details of its new high-power microwave weapon, the Hurricane 3000, designed to neutralize drone swarms. Developed by Norinco, this truck-mounted system uses focused microwave energy to disable drone electronics, boasting an effective interception range of over 3 kilometers against light and small unmanned aerial vehicles. This extended range allows for area denial, moving beyond short-range point defense.
The Hurricane 3000 can be integrated with laser weapons and conventional artillery to form a robust multi-layered defense against drones. Its capabilities are suitable for diverse missions including border security and urban public safety. Unlike jamming systems, these microwave weapons cause physical damage to drone components, offering a more definitive solution.
Norinco highlights that such systems possess a near-unlimited magazine capacity and low cost per shot. The US Army's comparable system, Leonidas, reportedly has an effective range of around 2 kilometers. Norinco is also exploring expanded uses for microwave technology, such as disrupting communications and countering airborne reconnaissance.
