China's Smart Ships Patrol Waters Autonomously

China's first intelligent maritime patrol vessel, Haixun 14102, has entered trial operations in Shenzhen, Guangdong province. This 12-meter vessel is equipped with advanced navigation and sensing devices, allowing for automated patrols and obstacle avoidance, demonstrating a significant integration of digital and AI technologies into China's water transport network.

The Haixun 14102 achieved impressive results during testing, maintaining a deviation of less than 1 meter over a 14.2 nautical mile route. In simulated rescue scenarios, it could detect and approach a person in the water within three minutes. This technology is designed to enhance situational awareness and support faster decision-making rather than replace human officers.

This pilot project aligns with China's "Smart Shipping 2030 Action Plan," which aims to establish pilot regions, routes, and operational scenarios for intelligent shipping by 2027. The focus is on integrating AI across vessels, ports, and maritime supervision, with applications in emergency rescue, navigation in adverse conditions, and transport.

The upgrade of existing vessels, like Haixun 14102, offers a cost-effective approach to intelligent shipping. Shenzhen maritime authorities are refining procedures for training, inspection, and certification based on the pilot's experience, paving the way for wider deployment of such intelligent systems.

Beyond intelligent navigation, China is also advancing green shipping initiatives. On rivers like the Minjiang and Lijiang, electric and new energy vessels are replacing diesel-powered ones to reduce pollution. This dual focus on digitalization and environmental sustainability is transforming daily maritime operations, from efficient patrols to quieter sightseeing trips and faster emergency responses.
