China's AI Rules: Deepfakes, Voice Cloning Now Illegal

China's Supreme People's Court released new guidelines on Monday aimed at addressing the growing risks associated with artificial intelligence. The legislation specifically targets the unauthorized creation and distribution of recognizable digital replicas, including deepfakes and voice cloning, without individual consent.

Further, the judicial guidance confronts issues such as algorithmic price discrimination and the spread of false information generated by AI technologies. These rules clarify accountability for service providers, establishing that they can be held legally liable if they fail to address infringing content upon notification.

The guidelines are designed to provide legal recourse for individuals whose rights are violated by AI-generated content, such as those whose likeness is used for defamation.
