Child Kills Puppies After Social Media Abuse Videos

A child tragically killed a litter of puppies after witnessing animal cruelty videos on social media platforms. This disturbing incident was shared with a House of Lords committee by Dr. Rebecca Foljambe, founder of Health Professionals for Safer Screens, who noted the child suffered severe nightmares following the act.

Dr. Foljambe emphasized an observed increase in children encountering violence against both peers and animals online, presenting this case as concrete evidence of harm. She stated that such online dangers are escalating daily. The committee is currently reviewing potential social media bans for individuals under 16.

Parents' anxieties regarding children's social media use are immense, with 93% deeming these platforms harmful. Frank Young of Parentkind reported that one in five older teenagers feel life is not worth living due to social media. Additionally, a third of young people receive sexual imagery from strangers, rising to half for girls, and another third regularly encounter violent or gory content.

Furthermore, social media is implicated in a decline in hormonal contraceptive use among young women due to unfounded claims about side effects. This misinformation is contributing to a rise in teenage pregnancies and the highest abortion rates among young women. Concerns also extend to physical health risks such as obesity and vision problems from excessive screen time.
