On Monday, OpenAI's popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, experienced a widespread service disruption that affected users globally. Many reported encountering network errors, significantly slowed responses, and difficulties in initiating or continuing their tasks. OpenAI acknowledged the incident on its status page, categorizing it as a partial outage. The company noted elevated latency impacting affected services and stated it was working to implement a solution.

The disruption appeared to disproportionately affect ChatGPT Work and its Plus subscribers. OpenAI's initial updates indicated Plus users were particularly impacted, with Work mode being unavailable. Later updates clarified that users across multiple subscription plans might face issues starting or continuing tasks within ChatGPT Work. This distinction is crucial as not all ChatGPT users were entirely unable to access the service.

Despite the issues with ChatGPT, OpenAI's other services, including its APIs and Codex, remained operational. This meant that developers relying on these infrastructures could continue their work uninterrupted. The incident occurred just days after another problem affecting ChatGPT Work on August 27, which also saw elevated error rates. These recurrences are notable given the increasing business reliance on ChatGPT for various critical tasks.

OpenAI's status dashboard reported 99.67% uptime for ChatGPT from June to August, with its APIs and Codex showing higher uptime percentages. However, even brief outages can impact users engaged in time-sensitive work. The ongoing reliance on ChatGPT for diverse applications, from casual queries to professional tasks like coding and content creation, makes service interruptions more impactful.
