Garage Door Giants Lock Down Smart Home Access

Garage door opener manufacturer Chamberlain Group has launched its new Security+ 3.0 platform, which effectively blocks third-party accessories from integrating with smart home systems. This move disables workarounds previously used by companies like Tailwind and Meross to connect Chamberlain openers to platforms such as Apple Home, Home Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Google Home.

Instead, users are directed to Chamberlain's MyQ app, an ecosystem that includes ads and often requires paid subscriptions for features beyond basic door control. Chamberlain's exit from the Connectivity Standards Alliance, the group behind the Matter interoperability standard, further emphasizes its commitment to a closed, proprietary system. This contrasts with the trend towards more open and integrated smart homes.

While Chamberlain states the new hardware modernizes its design and enhances security with Bluetooth Low Energy and advanced rolling code technology, it also introduces a cloud-based authentication check to prevent non-approved accessories. This makes it challenging for aftermarket controllers, though some simple workarounds, like Third Reality's remote-holding gadget, are emerging.
