23 Oct
Summary
- Over 11.7 million Capcom ID accounts potentially exposed personal data.
- Email addresses, IP addresses, and some personal details compromised.
- This breach occurred nearly six years after a previous ransomware attack.
Capcom, the renowned video game developer, has disclosed a major security incident impacting its Capcom ID system. This system is integral to the company's digital store and popular franchises like Street Fighter 6, Monster Hunter, and Resident Evil.
Suspicious activity was detected on Monday, October 19th, prompting Capcom to initiate an investigation and implement emergency IT system lockdowns. The breach could have exposed email and IP addresses for approximately 11.7 million accounts globally. Furthermore, evidence suggests that date of birth, gender, country, and nickname data were accessed for 43 specific records. A limited number of 196 accounts experienced password changes.
Capcom has emphasized that this breach does not impede players' ability to access or play their games. For the affected accounts with changed passwords, the company has reset their login credentials. Capcom plans to notify all affected customers directly and has confirmed that no credit card information was compromised. This security lapse follows a significant ransomware attack in 2020, which impacted up to 350,000 customer and partner records.
