Summary
- The Candela C-8 uses hydrofoils to fly above water, reducing energy consumption.
- Its electric C-Pod motor and hydrofoils offer a smooth, quiet ride.
- This Swedish-designed boat aims to revolutionize the US boating market.

The Candela C-8 represents a significant leap in marine technology, offering an electric hydrofoil experience that promises to redefine leisure boating. Developed over two years by a team of 50 engineers in Sweden, this 28-foot craft is designed for efficiency and a superior ride. Its advanced hydrofoil system allows the boat to 'fly' above the water, dramatically reducing drag and energy use.
This all-electric vessel is powered by a 69kWh Polestar battery and a C-Pod direct drive motor, eliminating the noise and emissions associated with traditional combustion engines. The hydrofoils, inspired by aircraft wings, generate lift through water pressure, enabling the C-8 to cruise at 22 knots using minimal power. This efficiency means the boat offers a comparable energy usage to a family car per mile.
Candela's innovation lies in its dynamic foil control system, which uses sensors and flight controllers to make over 100 micro-adjustments per second. This technology ensures stability and a remarkably smooth experience, even for novice operators. The C-8 boasts a range of approximately 57 nautical miles at cruising speed and has been introduced to the US market, starting in California, with aspirations to transform the industry.
