Brisbane Car Parks to Power Electric Cars with Solar
4 Nov
Summary
- Over 156 Brisbane car parks identified for solar-powered EV charging.
- Solar canopies at 10 sites could generate 1.93 GWh annually.
- Australia has one public EV charger for every 52.7 electric vehicles.

Researchers have identified 156 potential locations across Brisbane for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations powered by solar canopies. A detailed study of 10 high-turnover car parks, including shopping centres and park 'n' ride facilities, revealed a significant generation potential.
These 10 sites alone could produce 1.93 gigawatt-hours of solar energy annually, supporting over 31,000 vehicles each year. The research considered factors like solar potential, travel patterns, charging demand, and electricity network capacity to pinpoint the most suitable sites, excluding those with shading or difficult layouts.
This development comes as EV adoption in Australia surges, with EVs now making up over 25% of new car sales. However, the nation faces a shortage of public charging points, with only one charger per 52.7 EVs. The QUT study's framework aims to streamline planning by combining spatial data with network capacity assessments, particularly benefiting apartment dwellers who lack home charging options.
Commuter park 'n' ride locations are highlighted as ideal for solar charging due to extended daylight parking durations. Such installations offer dual benefits: powering EVs with clean energy and providing shade, while also encouraging the use of public transport for shorter commutes.
