Brazil Invests $444M in AI, Balancing US-China Ties

Brazil's government has announced a substantial investment of approximately 2.3 billion reais ($444.2 million) to advance its artificial intelligence capabilities. This initiative aims to strengthen national sovereignty over data by developing advanced AI technologies.

The investment plan strategically divides projects between U.S. and Chinese technology firms. A significant portion, 1.3 billion reais, will fund a supercomputing infrastructure project in Rio de Janeiro developed in collaboration with China's Huawei Technologies and iFlytek. This infrastructure is intended for the development of large language models applicable to various sectors.

An additional 1 billion reais will be allocated through a tender for a new supercomputer, projected to be among the world's top 10 most powerful AI processing machines. This advanced system will be installed in Rio Grande do Norte, a state chosen for its energy potential. Government officials anticipate U.S. chipmaker Nvidia will likely secure this tender.

This dual approach reflects Brazil's commitment to strategic autonomy, avoiding dependence on any single company, technology, or country. The government also announced partnerships for semiconductor development with Spain and plans for a national cloud-computing service and a center for algorithmic transparency.
