Hackers Hijack Your Devices: Check for Botnet Infection!
3 Dec, 2025
Summary
- Cybercriminals exploit infected devices for botnets to launch attacks.
- GreyNoise offers a free tool to check IP addresses for botnet connections.
- Results classify IPs as clean, suspicious, or general corporate service.

Cybercriminals frequently infect computers and network devices to create botnets, collections of compromised machines used for malicious activities. These botnets can be leveraged to launch cyberattacks, including Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) assaults, or to distribute spam and phishing campaigns. Owners of these hijacked devices often remain unaware of the intrusion unless they possess specialized network analysis skills.
To combat this, the security firm GreyNoise has introduced a free online utility called GreyNoise IP Check. This tool enables individuals to swiftly ascertain if their network's IP address is linked to a botnet. The assessment is nearly instantaneous, providing immediate feedback on whether devices within the network have been compromised or are under remote control. The service requires no login or personal information.
The GreyNoise IP Check categorizes IP addresses into three statuses: 'Clean,' indicating no malicious scanning activity; 'Malicious/Suspicious,' suggesting scanning activity and prompting users to check their network devices; and 'General corporate service,' identifying IPs used by VPNs, corporations, or cloud providers with normal scanning behavior. If an IP is flagged as malicious or suspicious, users are advised to run virus scans, install the latest firmware on all network-enabled devices, change passwords, and disable unnecessary remote access functions.
