BMW Bets on Hydrogen: iX5 Hydrogen Arrives 2028
10 Apr
Summary
- BMW plans to produce electric, hybrid, and hydrogen iX5 models.
- The hydrogen iX5 is set for production in 2028.
- Hydrogen iX5 offers a 385-mile range on a full tank.

BMW is set to introduce a variety of powertrains across its upcoming range, including pure electric, plug-in hybrid, and hydrogen fuel cell options. The company has confirmed that its iX5 Hydrogen model is scheduled for production to commence in 2028.
Engineers have developed a novel packaging solution for the hydrogen system, integrating seven high-pressure tanks. This design allows the hydrogen fuel cell system and a high-voltage battery to coexist without compromising interior space. The iX5 Hydrogen is anticipated to deliver an emissions-free range of up to 385 miles, with refueling times comparable to conventional vehicles, taking less than five minutes for a full 7kg tank.
Despite significant investment in hydrogen research, including co-funding from the Bavarian state and Germany's Federal Ministry of Transport, the technology faces challenges. Battery electric vehicles continue to dominate the market due to rapid advancements in charging times and widespread infrastructure development, which has lagged for hydrogen refueling stations globally.
