AWS Data Center Hit by Unknown Objects, Sparks Fire
2 Mar
Summary
- Objects struck an AWS data center, causing sparks and a fire.
- Firefighters shut down power and generators to extinguish the blaze.
- Recovery is expected to take multiple hours, impacting services.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) confirmed service disruptions in the United Arab Emirates following an incident at one of its data centers. Unidentified objects struck the facility, igniting a fire and leading to a complete power shutdown by emergency services.
AWS reported that the fire department disconnected both the primary power and backup generators as they worked to control the blaze. As of Sunday evening PST, permission to restore power had not yet been granted, with AWS estimating recovery would take multiple hours.
The company is actively rerouting customer requests to a different data center to mitigate the impact. While the cause remains under investigation, AWS has not officially connected the 'objects' to broader regional conflicts.
Additionally, AWS's service health dashboard indicated power outages affecting another data center located in Bahrain. This situation highlights the critical nature of cloud infrastructure and its susceptibility to unforeseen events.
