Asus ROG Cetra Open: High Cost, Mixed Bag
20 Mar
Summary
- Open ear design prioritizes comfort and situational awareness.
- Earbuds are priced at $229.99/£174.99, significantly higher than alternatives.
- Bulky charging case and generic design detract from premium price point.

Asus has entered the open earbud market with its ROG Cetra Open, targeting gamers with a design that prioritizes comfort and environmental awareness. Unlike traditional earbuds, these clip onto the ear, leaving the ear canal open, which is beneficial for staying aware of surroundings.
The primary drawback is the steep price of $229.99 / £174.99, positioning them as significantly more expensive than many competing gaming headsets and even other open-ear alternatives. This high cost is further challenged by a generic, bulky design and a comically large charging case, which feels plasticky and is impractical for pocket portability.
Performance-wise, the Cetra Open earbuds deliver surprisingly good sound with decent bass for an open-ear model. They are exceptionally comfortable for long wear and offer a secure fit, suitable for active use. The microphones are adequate for calls and gaming communication. Battery life provides around 16 hours per bud, with the case offering additional charges.
Despite these positives, the open design means immersion can be challenging, and the advertised 'Immersion Mode' for noise cancellation is largely ineffective. The browser-based software, Gear Link, offers customization for EQ and RGB lighting without bloatware. Ultimately, these earbuds are hard to recommend at full price, with their appeal limited to those desperate for an open-ear gaming solution or found during a sale.
