Astranis eyes space surveillance market

Astranis, a satellite manufacturer, has introduced Perceptor, a novel spacecraft engineered to inspect and track other satellites within geostationary orbit. This development marks a strategic expansion for the San Francisco-based company, moving beyond its primary focus on broadband communications into the burgeoning field of space domain awareness.

The Perceptor spacecraft utilizes Astranis's existing microGEO satellite platform, enhanced with advanced sensors and electric propulsion for repositioning. This allows for close flybys of other satellites, enabling detailed observation and making evasion of surveillance more challenging. Multiple Perceptor units could operate in tandem for comprehensive monitoring.

This initiative aligns with the U.S. Space Force's growing concerns regarding geostationary orbit, particularly as China and other nations develop advanced maneuvering spacecraft. These capabilities could potentially threaten U.S. military assets like communications and missile-warning satellites. Astranis's dual-use Perceptor platform aims to address these vulnerabilities for both government and commercial clients.

The company's entry into this competitive market follows a significant $450 million funding round, which it intends to use for expanding manufacturing and securing U.S. government contracts. Astranis previously announced its selection for the Space Force's Andromeda contract vehicle, supporting next-generation surveillance satellite constellations.
