Arm Unveils AI Chip, Shifting Strategy for Billions

Arm Holdings has unveiled its first self-designed artificial intelligence data center chip, the AGI CPU. This launch signifies a major strategic pivot for the company, moving beyond its traditional licensing model to direct chip production. The company anticipates this new direction will generate billions in additional revenue.
The AGI CPU is engineered to handle the intensive data processing demands of agentic AI, a type of artificial intelligence capable of acting autonomously on behalf of users. This capability is driving increased demand for advanced processing units.
Meta Platforms is identified as the lead partner for the AGI CPU, having collaborated on its design. Other notable customers for this new chip include OpenAI, Cloudflare, SAP, and SK Telecom. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is handling the fabrication of the chip.
Arm plans to commence volume production of the AGI CPU in the second half of this year. The company is also collaborating with server manufacturers like Lenovo and Quanta Computer to offer complete system solutions incorporating the new chip.
