Summary
- Arcee AI released AI Trinity-Large-Thinking, a 399B parameter model.
- The model uses Apache 2.0 license for full commercial use.
- Arcee's release aims to provide a sovereign alternative to proprietary models.

San Francisco-based Arcee AI has unveiled AI Trinity-Large-Thinking, a powerful 399-billion parameter text-only reasoning model. Released under the permissive Apache 2.0 license, the model allows for unrestricted customization and commercial use by any entity.
This release signifies a strategic effort to champion "American Open Weights" as a sovereign alternative to the closed-off frontier models emerging in 2025. Enterprises increasingly seek domestic AI solutions, a demand Arcee intends to meet.
The lean 30-person team at Arcee secured $24 million in Series A funding and boldly committed $20 million to train Trinity Large using advanced NVIDIA B300 Blackwell GPUs.
Trinity-Large-Thinking features an extremely sparse Mixture-of-Experts architecture, activating only 13 billion parameters per token for enhanced inference speed and efficiency. This design, coupled with proprietary techniques like SMEBU, allows it to perform comparably to much larger systems.
Arcee partnered with DatologyAI to curate over 10 trillion tokens, expanding the training corpus to 20 trillion tokens with a blend of web data and high-quality synthetic data. This curriculum emphasizes reasoning over simple imitation, carefully excluding copyrighted materials.
A key innovation is Trinity's "thinking" phase, enabling sophisticated reasoning and long-horizon agentic tasks. This addresses prior feedback and positions the model for complex, multi-turn tool usage. The model demonstrates strong performance on benchmarks like PinchBench and IFBench, approaching proprietary leader performance at a fraction of the cost.
The Apache 2.0 license provides enterprises with full ownership and auditability, crucial for regulated industries. Arcee also released Trinity-Large-TrueBase, offering a raw foundational checkpoint for custom alignment. The community reception has been positive, with Trinity-Large-Preview already a top open model in the U.S.
