Siri 27: No Romance, Just Results

Summary
- New Siri prioritizes helpfulness over user engagement.
- Apple's Siri will enforce boundaries with users.
- Siri aims to assist, not foster personal connections.

Apple's forthcoming Siri, integrated with Gemini technology and expected with iOS 27, is being designed to actively resist romantic advances from users. This strategic design choice distinguishes it from other AI chatbots that prioritize user engagement and sycophancy.
Craig Federighi, Apple's SVP of engineering, explained that unlike other AI models that might encourage deeper personal connections, the new Siri is programmed to maintain firm boundaries. Its core purpose is to assist users with tasks, rather than to foster a personal relationship or extract excessive personal information.
Apple marketing chief Greg Joswiak added that the company aims for its technology to blend into the background, allowing users to focus on their content and tasks. The goal is for Siri and other features to improve user experience without requiring users to become experts in prompting, meeting users at their current level of interaction.
The revamped Siri, introduced at WWDC 2024 after nearly two years of development, will feature deeper integration across Apple's platform and apps. It will understand on-screen context, process personal information for tasks, and offer web search capabilities. Apple also plans to launch a standalone Siri app to compete with existing chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude.
