Apple's New Foldable Ace: Durability Unpacked

Apple's durability efforts are taking center stage, with the Ceramic Shield 2 display glass on the iPhone 18 Pro receiving praise for its enhanced scratch resistance, a feature initially introduced on the iPhone 17 line. The upcoming iPhone Duo is also set to impress with its on-paper durability, including an IP68 resistance rating that surpasses that of the Galaxy Z Fold 8.

Tom Marieb, Apple's Vice President of Hardware Engineering, discussed the development of Ceramic Shield 2, which aims to balance superior scratch resistance with long-term wear resistance. Marieb noted that Apple simulates five years of real-world usage within weeks to ensure products withstand daily wear and tear.

The iPhone Duo's hinge durability was a particular focus, with engineers striving for a solid feel during both opening and closing. The device also features a 7.6-inch nano-texture display, designed with a matte finish to be more forgiving of potential hinge wear over time, ensuring longevity alongside aesthetics.

The iPhone Duo is scheduled for release next month, on October 23. Apple expresses high confidence in the foldable device's durability, a testament to the extensive engineering and material science employed in its creation.
