AirPods With Cameras Incoming Soon?
3 Aug
Summary
- Apple testing two new AirPods versions with cameras.
- Future AirPods may function as AI assistants, not for content.
- Launch could happen as soon as this year, possibly soon.
Apple is actively testing two new models of AirPods that feature integrated cameras. Internally codenamed B798 and B790, the B790 variant is reportedly advancing more quickly and could be released before the end of this year.
These camera-equipped AirPods are envisioned less as tools for surveillance or content creation and more as advanced wearable AI assistants. The cameras will not capture photos or videos but will analyze visual input to enhance onboard artificial intelligence capabilities, such as a next-generation Siri. Similar to smart glasses, a small LED privacy indicator will signal when the cameras are in use.
References to the B790 model have already been detected in iOS beta code, suggesting an imminent launch. If Apple follows its typical product release schedule, these new AirPods might be unveiled at the September iPhone event. This follows last year's unveiling of the AirPods Pro 3 at a similar September event.
Rumors suggest these AI-powered AirPods could be branded as AirPods Pro Ultra. This development comes as Apple reportedly considers delaying its rumored smart glasses due to public backlash against similar wearable tech.
