Apple Sues OpenAI Over Stolen Trade Secrets
11 Jul
Summary
- Apple claims OpenAI stole trade secrets for hardware innovation.
- Two former Apple employees are named in the lawsuit.
- Over 400 former Apple employees now work for OpenAI.

Apple initiated legal action against OpenAI and two former employees, alleging the theft of trade secrets to advance OpenAI's consumer hardware initiatives. The lawsuit, filed in California federal court, centers on claims of a coordinated scheme to acquire Apple's confidential data, encompassing product designs, manufacturing processes, and supply chain insights.
The legal complaint names Chang Liu, a former senior system electrical engineer, and Tang Yew Tan, ex-Vice President of Product Design for iPhone and Apple Watch. Apple contends that Liu illicitly accessed its internal network and downloaded hardware-related files after his departure. Tan is accused of systematically emailing himself confidential information about Apple suppliers and industry summaries before leaving.
Further allegations include OpenAI employees attempting to solicit confidential information from Apple suppliers and encouraging job candidates to bring Apple parts to interviews for 'show and tell' sessions. Apple noted that over 400 former employees now work at OpenAI, some possessing knowledge of its confidential information. The company emphasized that OpenAI's hiring of ex-employees does not grant it rights to utilize Apple's trade secrets for its own hardware development.
This legal battle escalates existing tensions between the two companies, heightened by the competitive AI product race. Apple had reportedly communicated its concerns to OpenAI in February without receiving a response. OpenAI had previously explored its legal options concerning Apple's alleged breach of contract.
