Apple is introducing a major update to its Podcasts application, integrating HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) video technology. This advancement significantly enhances the user experience by enabling seamless transitions between watching and listening to content. The new capabilities include a horizontal full-display option for videos and the ability to download both video and audio streams for offline consumption, a notable improvement over the previous RSS-like feed method.
The updated Podcasts app will also feature picture-in-picture functionality, facilitating multitasking, particularly on devices like the iPad. Furthermore, the application will intelligently adapt video quality to ensure smooth playback, regardless of network conditions, whether connected via Wi-Fi or cellular data.
This comprehensive update is slated for release this spring as part of the upcoming operating system version 26.4. It will be available across multiple Apple platforms, including iOS, iPadOS, visionOS, and the web. The enhanced version is currently in beta testing.
