MacBook Neo: Apple's Most Repairable Laptop Since 2014?
14 Mar
Summary
- MacBook Neo is Apple's most repairable laptop since 2014.
- Batteries and keyboards attach with screws, not glue.
- Soldered RAM limits AI upgrade potential, iFixit notes.

The recently announced MacBook Neo from Apple is noted as the company's most repairable laptop since 2014. iFixit's analysis highlights significant changes, such as attaching batteries and keyboards with screws instead of glue, and facilitating the replacement of parts like the camera and fingerprint sensor.
Despite these advancements, the MacBook Neo received a repairability score of 6 out of 10 from iFixit. This score is lower than some competitors, like certain Lenovo ThinkPads which achieved scores of 9 or 10. A key limitation identified is the 8GB of DRAM memory being soldered directly to the circuit board.
iFixit's CEO, Kyle Wiens, suggests this design choice, common across Apple's recent Mac models, will hinder future upgrades for artificial intelligence applications. While Apple emphasizes privacy benefits of local AI processing, Wiens recommends incorporating additional, user-upgradable memory chips to better support the growing complexity of AI tasks.
