Apple is introducing a new feature called Apple Reference Image to combat the rise of AI-generated content and ensure photo authenticity. This feature, announced during the company's recent Surprise and Shine event, aims to provide a verifiable way to confirm images captured on the iPhone 18 Pro are genuine.
When a photograph is taken, the iPhone's main camera sensor captures signed sensor data. Apple's Private Cloud Compute service then transforms this data into an unalterable reference image. This reference image functions as a 'digital negative,' viewable within the Photos app, and can be compared against other versions of the photo to detect alterations.
Initially, reference images will be accessible within the Photos app. However, Apple is also making APIs available to developers, allowing them to integrate this authenticity verification into their own applications. Additionally, Apple announced support for the SynthID standard to aid users in identifying images that have been created or manipulated by AI.
