Apple's GymKit Expands: iPhone Now Connects to Gym Machines
10 Sep
Summary
- GymKit, released in 2017, now syncs workout data between iPhones and gym equipment.
- AirPods Pro 3 will handle heart rate data, while the iPhone manages workout records.
- Gym equipment still requires specific GymKit integration for data sharing.

Originally introduced in October 2017, Apple's GymKit aimed to bridge the gap between smartwatches and gym equipment by enabling seamless data syncing. This innovative concept faced adoption challenges due to the slow replacement cycle of gym machines and the rising cost of home fitness gear, coupled with the prerequisite of owning an Apple Watch and compatible equipment.
However, with the upcoming iOS 27, Apple is significantly broadening GymKit's reach by extending its functionality to the iPhone. This enhancement means that iPhones, paired with AirPods Pro 3 for heart rate monitoring, can now interact directly with compatible cardio machines. The iPhone will act as the central hub for displaying workout metrics and recording data, contributing to a more comprehensive fitness tracking experience within the Fitness app.
Crucially, the need for GymKit integration on the cardio machines themselves persists, regardless of whether an Apple Watch or an iPhone is being used. iOS 27 simply introduces the convenience of using the iPhone's NFC reader for this tap-to-connect functionality, mirroring the experience previously available only to Apple Watch users. Devices without GymKit integration can still track workouts independently but will not sync with gym equipment.
