US Approves First Microreactor Demo
8 Apr
Summary
- Antares Nuclear received federal approval for its demonstration system.
- The company's Mark-0 microreactor is set to be fueled soon.
- Electricity production from the system is anticipated in 2027.

Antares Nuclear Inc., a California-based startup, has achieved a significant regulatory milestone by winning federal approval to complete its demonstration microreactor system. This authorization is the first of its kind granted under a US program designed to expedite the development of novel fission technologies.
The company has already constructed its Mark-0 microreactor and is preparing for fuel loading in the upcoming months. This places Antares on schedule to fulfill a critical objective for participants in the US Energy Department's reactor pilot program.
This program, launched last year, aims to advance nuclear energy utilization. The goal is for multiple projects to reach criticality, a self-sustaining nuclear chain-reaction, by July 4. Antares received approval for its safety analysis on Monday, distinguishing itself as the first company in the pilot program to achieve this.
Antares Nuclear anticipates its microreactor system will begin generating electricity in 2027. This approval represents the final regulatory signoff needed to move forward with the demonstration.
Separately, Apple Inc. is on track to launch its first foldable iPhone later this year, potentially in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Despite earlier concerns about manufacturing delays, Apple plans to release the foldable model around the same time as its traditional iPhone offerings.
The foldable iPhone is expected to be priced above $2,000, aiming to enhance Apple's average sales price and revenue. The device will feature a wide display orientation and an updated iOS to optimize app performance.
Apple is also adjusting its yearly release schedule, with the next entry-level model expected in spring 2027, alongside a new iPhone Air and a lower-budget iPhone 18e.
