Android's New AI Defense Against Spoofed Calls
2 Jun
Summary
- New Android feature flags spoofed calls with pop-up warnings.
- It uses RCS to digitally bind phone numbers with handsets.
- The feature starts rolling out on Android 12 and later.

Android has introduced a new feature designed to combat the growing threat of spoofed calls, especially those enhanced by AI voice-cloning technology. This defense mechanism provides users with real-time warnings, alerting them if a call is not genuinely coming from a known contact's number. The feature integrates with the Google Dialer and utilizes the RCS communication standard to perform a digital validity check.
This new functionality begins its rollout for all Android phones running Android 12 and later, starting from today. It establishes a secure link between a phone number and its physical handset. When an Android user calls another, a silent background signal confirms the call's legitimacy. If this confirmation is absent, the Google Dialer flags the call as potentially fraudulent, removing the contact's photo and labeling it as an 'Unknown caller' in the log.
Google aims for maximum interoperability by building this feature on RCS, hoping it can eventually extend to other platforms. The goal is to protect users from devastating impersonation scams that can convincingly mimic loved ones, a problem that traditional robocall detection methods have not fully solved. While AI fighting AI is an option, Google prefers this more definitive, hardware-based verification method.
