12 May
Summary
- New Android feature blocks scam calls impersonating banks.
- Live Threat Detection will identify more scamming apps.
- Enhanced theft protection includes biometric device locking.

Google has announced several new security and privacy features for the Android operating system, focusing on combating scams and protecting users from theft. These updates were revealed during the Android Show: I/O Edition event.
A significant new feature aims to combat banking scam calls. This protection automatically ends calls from numbers that impersonate participating banks and alerts the user. This feature is expected to begin rolling out in the coming weeks for devices running Android 11 and newer.
Google is also expanding its Live Threat Detection capabilities. This platform, which analyzes app behavior for suspicious activity, will soon be able to detect more apps attempting to scam or abuse users. This enhancement utilizes dynamic signal monitoring to identify malicious patterns.
Further security enhancements are being introduced to protect against device theft. Users will gain more control over Failed Authentication Lock settings, and devices will be lockable via biometric authentication. These measures are intended to prevent thieves from accessing or using a stolen phone.
Finally, a new privacy tool will allow users to temporarily share their precise location with an app only while the app is open, preventing continuous location tracking for quick tasks.
