Pixel Phones Get App Lock Security
17 Aug
Summary
- New App Lock feature in Android 17 beta offers biometric security.
- App Lock hides notification content and removes widgets automatically.
- Samsung's One UI 9.5 may also prepare similar privacy tools.
Pixel phones are preparing to launch a new App Lock feature, similar to one available on iOS 18. This security enhancement is currently being tested in the Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 release, with a full rollout expected around December. Once enabled, users can select specific apps to require their phone's unlock method, such as biometrics or a password, before opening.
Beyond basic app access control, the App Lock feature includes advanced privacy measures. It automatically hides notification content for secured apps and removes any connected widgets or shortcuts. This ensures that sensitive information, like messages from apps such as WhatsApp, remains hidden from casual viewers. AI agents are noted as an exception, retaining access if previously permitted.
This new App Lock functionality will be managed through a dedicated menu in the Security & privacy settings. Notably, Samsung's upcoming One UI 9.5, based on Android 17, also appears to be developing a comparable app locking tool. While its release timeline is less certain, its presence indicates a growing trend in Android's native privacy features, offering simpler data restriction than previous tools like Private Space.
